The Green House’s life cycle assessment (LCA) study of South African milk production has been featured in the latest issue of the SA Association for Food Science and Technology’s quarterly magazine, FST. This study, undertaken for the WWF Sustainable Business programme, assessed the life cycle environmental implications of milk production in the Western Cape, including the interrelated impacts of growing feed and dairy farming, processing, transport and refrigeration of milk, and also the retail and consumer stages of the milk value chain. The study particularly highlighted the complexities and trade-offs between energy, water and biodiversity, and how procurement decisions can influence these key areas of concern.
